Welcome to the magical world of Nerikomi pottery with Jules Mills! Held from Sept 3rd - 24th from 6:30 - 9:30pm in our middle room.
Course cost: $290 including all clay, glazes, firings, and pottery supplies.
Explore the colourful, meditative world of patterning and pigmentation in this two-day handbuilding workshop. Using nerikomi-inspired techniques (a Japanese artisanal method that translates to “kneading-into”), you’ll learn how to incorporate pigments directly into clay and use these coloured clay bodies to build layered, marbled, and patterned designs.
This decorative method focuses on surface design that’s embedded within the clay itself—rather than added with glaze—making it an ideal playground for experimentation, creativity, and unexpected results.
We’ll start with the basics—an introduction to the materials at play and the history behind this striking technique. You’ll learn how to colour clay, plan simple patterns, and begin constructing “sushi roll”-style patterned blocks. Think: slice-and-reveal surprises, bold contrasts, and hypnotic layering.
Once your blocks have firmed up, we’ll slice, flatten, and transform them into functional forms using slump molds and handbuilding techniques. You’ll combine colourful surface design with slab construction to create objects like plates, trays, or tiles.
All pieces will be clear glazed and food-safe when finished (upon request and based on attendees’ preference)
This workshop is beginner- and intermediate-friendly, with lots of room for play, personal style, and creative problem-solving. You’ll leave with a small collection of finished work and a solid foundation in one of the most visually exciting decorative methods in ceramics.
All finished work will be ready for pickup in 3–4 weeks.
